The Great Gate Marco Polo at the Shangai Expo

1 May - 31 October 2010

The work is dedicated to Marco Polo, ten metres long by twelve metres, it has been installed in front of the Italian Pavilion paying homage to the myth of the great Venetian traveller and at the same time bear witness to the encounters and exchanges between two great civilizations which have occurred ever more frequently in the era of globalization.

The Great Gate comprises sixteen large reliefs in four horizontal and vertical levels which can be all read independently, or interact with each other and help present the sculpture in all its plastic and spatial entirety with a monumental strength. At the same time it leads to a deeper and more thoughtful meditation of the individual details; 'hemispheres, cubes, rhomboids, blades, truncated pyramids, wedges all explode from beneath the surface of the bronze breaking free like fields of shoots rising from the earth.'
